Introduction

The certificate in Personal Training and Sport Massage is an introductory higher education course designed to develop your skills as a personal trainer and sport massage therapist.

You will improve your knowledge in health and fitness and gain experience working with clients in real situations and context as well as having opportunities to gain vocational awards in fitness, nutrition and massage. You will work with highly experienced lecturers who will also provide individual tutorial support throughout the course.

On graduating, you will be ready to enter the health and fitness industry or progress to a BSc degree programme in Sport and Exercise Science.

Overview

The course will develop your understanding of human physiology and how the body responds and adapts to physical activity. You will learn how to conduct and interpret fitness assessments data and will use this information to design and manage training programmes. You will also improve your understanding of the relationship between nutrition, health and fitness. The course will also allow you to develop the techniques associated with sports massage and you will provide treatments within our clinical sessions.

Throughout the course, you will have the opportunity to gain vocational awards in personal training, sports massage, nutrition and first aid.

Modules


The course consists of six 20 credit modules that are split over two semesters. Semester 1 runs from late September to January, semester 2 runs from late January to May.

Year 1 (Cert HE)

• Human Physiology and Fitness (20 credits; compulsory)
• Introduction to Health and Exercise Psychology (20 credits; compulsory)
• Kinesiology (20 credits; compulsory)
• Learning in the Digital Era (20 credits; compulsory; Graduate Attributes Framework module)
• Personal Training (20 credits; compulsory) (C)
• Sport Massage (20 credits; compulsory).

Entry Criteria

32 UCAS Points

Applicants over the age of 21 with no UCAS points will be offered an interview.

Assessment

Whilst the certificate is predominantly assessed through a combination of course work and practical examination, students will also develop an extensive portfolio of professional practice and case study evidence.

90% of our graduates in this subject area are employed or in full-time further study within 6 months of graduating. In general, the certificate in Personal Training will develop graduates for careers such as:
