Introduction
The Certificate in Higher Education in the Policing Profession is a level 4 qualification introducing the core concepts of policing. It has been designed as a building block for students wanting to pursue a career in policing.
On successful completion of the course, students can continue onto the BSc Professional Policing (sometimes referred to as the ‘pre-join’ degree) which provides one of the entry routes into policing. This is a core element of the Policing Education Qualifications Framework (PEQF), and is a professional academic knowledge-based degree structured on the national curriculum for the police constable role.
The Certificate in Higher Education in the Policing Profession enables entrants to gain the academic theory and knowledge of professional policing. The programme is one year in duration and on successful completion, students can progress to the BSc (Hons) Professional Policing Degree.
The completion of the CertHE or the degree course does not automatically guarantee entrance to the police service, however on the successful completion of the police selection process graduates will be subject to a two-year probationary period with the chosen police service. The degree has a currency of 5 years following graduation for recruitment into policing.

The qualification is delivered following the curriculum of the College Of Policing, the professional body for police officers and staff working within the police service in England and Wales.
The course covers key areas of policing that are critical to providing an efficient, effective and accountable service to the public.
The course is delivered by staff members, some of whom are former police officers (with over 150 years of policing experience between them and ranging from the ranks of Police Constable to Chief Constable). These staff have extensive experience in a range of policing ‘specialisms’ such as terrorism, public protection and police strategic management alongside experience of the important elements of community and response policing.
The course team have significant links with a number of Police forces across Wales and England as well as with the wider Criminal Justice Profession.
Overview
The Certificate in Higher Education in the Policing Profession will provide students with knowledge and understanding of key topics that are critical to effective policing in the 21st century.
The course will develop students in such a way that it will enable them to make sound decisions in even the most trying of circumstances, to consider the application of discretion when dealing with offenders, and to base policing responses upon an evidence-based considered approach.

Assessment
The course is assessed by the deployment of a range of assessment methods.
Assessments include (but are not limited to) written coursework (typically essays or reports ranging from 2000 words at level 4), simulations, workbooks, group and/or individual presentations and examination.
Each module is worth 20 credits which amounts to two assessments per module.
Career Opportunities
The course team has developed very close links with a number of professional organisations in both the public sector and legal services fields. This has allowed for close consultation on the development of course content and the availability of unique work experience opportunities.
For those students who wish to pursue a career in the Police force then the course works closely with South Wales Police, Gwent and Dyfed Powys Police and has developed a volunteer work programme for the students to gain valuable experience and insight into the profession. This will put the students in a more advantageous position to gain employment in their chosen profession.
The course works closely with other Public sector organisations, the combination of both legal and public sector understanding and knowledge would be seen as a benefit to the wider Criminal Justice professions.
The team has developed close relationships with local firms and organisations and developing work experience opportunities that would benefit the students if they chose to extend into further criminal justice study.
