Introduction

Health and Care is changing in these unprecedented times. It has never been more important for the right people to get into the right jobs in the sector. You will need to be currently working as a Healthcare Support Worker or Healthcare Assistant to apply to this course.

If you have the passion and drive to get into Nursing, Paramedic Science, Midwifery or any area of health training but need help gaining the right qualifications, this course is for you. This programme is run in conjunction with our health board and health organisation partners. It is designed to give you the opportunity to evidence the skills and competencies you display in your work. It is closely aligned with Nursing and Medical Council requirements.

Overview

The course provides a theoretical and practical underpinning to nursing research and studies, as well as training in higher educational skills and techniques. We also offer access to current key organisations and people within the health sector. We also provide a high level of academic support across the whole university to help strengthen your academic skills.

We work closely with colleagues in the health and educational sector to ensure this programme is sector ready.

All modules are available to be taught in the medium of Welsh.

You are encouraged to apply for your first choice of health degree while you study with us. If you choose to stay with us after passing your first year, you are given an unconditional offer for the second year for all courses in the health portfolio. These are:

• DipHE Nursing Studies and Health
• BSc Health Management
• BSc Health and Social Care
• BSc Health and Care of Children and Young People

Once passing the second year, you can then ‘top up’ to a full degree in any of our BSc programmes.

Modules

Year One – Level 4 (Cert HE)

• Anatomy, Physiology and the Biopsychosocial Model of Health (20 credits; compulsory)
• Communication and Integrated Working (20 credits; compulsory)
• Fundamentals of Care (40 credits; compulsory)
• Introduction to Research and Evidence-based Practice (20 credits; compulsory)
• Personal and Professional Development for Nurses (20 credits; compulsory).

Entry Criteria

This programme is for applicants who are currently working in the health and care sector only.

We prefer applicants with a level 2 or 3 qualification. However, due to the nature of the course each applicant is be considered individually on merit. This means we are able to take your life and work experience or current job role into account.

We recommend making clear in your personal statement:

• Your current job role and organisation
• If you have or need a GCSE maths qualification (or equivalent)
• If you are a Welsh speaker
• The type of healthcare role you aspire to.

Assessment

• Assessments include; essays, reports, presentations, and professional portfolios.
• You will be asked to evidence your competencies and ability to meet skills requirements in the role you undertake as part of this course.
• You will be supported to utilise information technology communication and organisational skills for your assignments.

Career Opportunities


We have a very strong employment support and work experience system within the Health Portfolio. We have partnered with a highly regarded Nursing Agency to provide opportunities for paid and volunteer roles within health and care. We also work closely with local health boards and universities to ensure you never miss a chance to get the progress.

This course has a particularly high rate of higher educational progression, with around 75% of our first-year students progressing onto their first choice degree. These include general adult nursing, paediatric nursing, paramedic science, midwifery and occupational therapy across the UK.
