This Certificate of Higher Education course is designed to give you the tools to apply and transfer your skills into the workplace. It will give you the confidence to anticipate problems and find solutions; work independently and with other people; and plan things out before you start and complete the things that you’ve started. All the skills employers look for.

This programme is specifically focused on employability, ensuring that students are able to use workplace experiences to inform their studies throughout each module. Explicit outcomes include the creation of digital portfolios, through which students can demonstrate their understanding of key skills, theories and methodologies for use at interview and to secure career progression.

After successful completion of this programme, students are welcome to continue studying with us onto our BSc (Hons) Applied Computing Level 5 and 6.

Modules

Level 4

• Computer Architecture and Operating Systems (20 credits; compulsory)

Upon the successful completion of this module, the student should be able to:

o determine the essential characteristics and concepts behind computer systems and components, number systems, data capacities and transfer speeds, in the context of typical PC hardware and networking environments;
o demonstrate an understanding of general Operating System concepts.

• Learning in the Digital Era (20 credits; compulsory)

Upon the successful completion of this module, the student should be able to:

o demonstrate the foundational skills required to be a resilient and healthy independent learner;
o practise the principles of learning agility;
o use suitable technology to support and enhance their learning experience within the discipline area.

• Networks and Cyber Security Essentials (20 credits; compulsory)

Upon the successful completion of this module, the student should be able to:

o develop fundamental understanding of network basics in terms of architecture, devices, application and protocols;
o demonstrate systematic understanding of security policies and measures to mitigate internal and external attacks and threats in a network.

• Introduction to Web and Database Concepts (20 credits; compulsory)

Upon the successful completion of this module, the student should be able to:

o demonstrate a systematic understanding and application of the fundamental concepts, technologies, and standards required for building and rendering web pages;
o demonstrate a systematic understanding of the underlying concepts of data and databases, and the methodology of database design. Apply appropriate systems investigation and analysis techniques to design and implement relational database solutions.

• Analyzing and Solving Problems (20 credits; compulsory)

Upon the successful completion of this module, the student should be able to:

o evaluate a problem and formulate requirements and constraints;
o analyse a problem and produce a logical solution

• Software Solutions for Business (20 credits; compulsory)

Upon the successful completion of this module, the student should be able to:

o knowledge and skills to use software packages and applications to support day-to-day business operations;
o ability to create, present and communicate information in a structured and managed way at their workplace.

Entry Criteria

This programme is only available to Home applicants.

Entry onto the programme is by individual merit. Normally students under the age of 21 will have at least 1 A Level or BTEC National Diploma/Certificate or equivalent. For mature candidates, experience can often be taken into consideration in lieu of formal qualifications.

Grades are important; however, our offers are not solely based on academic results. We are interested in creative people that demonstrate a strong commitment to their chosen subject area and therefore we welcome applications from individuals from a wide range of backgrounds. To assess student suitability for their chosen course we normally arrange interviews for all applicants at which your skills, achievements and life experience will be considered as well as your qualifications.
