Introduction
Develop your understanding and knowledge of education in a primary school context, and expand your skills, through our Education Studies: Primary degree programme.
This degree focuses on education in a wide context, including the importance of inclusion issues, how children learn and the professional values and practice involved in primary education. BA Education Studies: Primary is one of the very few degree programmes in the UK which focus on studying education in the primary school sector.
This course is also available through the medium of Welsh.

Overview
The programme will provide you with the understanding and skills that are relevant for working with children of a primary school age. The link between theory, policy and practice in primary education will be explored, drawing on pedagogy, psychology and sociology.
There is an emphasis on contemporary issues in primary education, and the programme enables students to engage in small-scale research in an area that interests them, as well as an extended essay in their third year.
The programme will explore issues such as:
• Where and how do children learn?
• What are the barriers to learning that children experience and how may they be overcome?
• What are the key factors that have an impact on primary education in Wales today?
• How do adults work most effectively with children in an educational setting?
• What are the benefits of a bilingual education?
• What are the most important skills that learners need for the future?
This programme will also enable students to develop key transferable skills including problem solving, team work, communication and critical thinking.

• The Enquiring Mind: Creative Approaches to Teaching and Learning (20 credits; compulsory)

Year Three - Level 6 (BA)

Entry Criteria
Typical Offer: UCAS points = 88 and above.
Students apply for the course from a variety of backgrounds, both directly from A-level or other Level 3 courses (eg CACHE) or from having left education.
No specific A-level subject is required. If students wish to train to become teachers in Wales following graduation, they will need B grades, at GCSE level, in English and Mathematics, and a B grade in Welsh - if they wish to train through the medium of Welsh. They will need a C grade in GCSE Science.
The course welcomes students from non-standard entry backgrounds and we consider experience, relevant life skills and academic potential when assessing applicants.
During the first semester, all students undertake a study skills module, which helps prepare them for the requirements of higher education.

Assessment
Students present work in numerous ways to enable them to develop their team skills, as well as independent learning skills.
Assessments include problem learning-based scenarios, group presentations, academic poster presentations, portfolios, written assignments and individual seminar presentations.
There are no examinations.

Our graduates are employed in a variety of settings.
The nature of the degree means our graduates have the skills, the attributes, the understanding and the abilities to work in a variety of sectors, including the education sector, social care, health and similar professions, as well as the voluntary sector.
Our degree is relevant for those graduates who wish to train to become teachers through the Post Graduate Certificate in Education (PGCE) route as the degree gives the background and the depth of understanding regarding issues that are relevant for primary school children. Other graduates have continued their studies with a variety of master's programmes.
