Introduction

Are you looking to work outside the UK or undertake a career in a global business? This degree programme is designed for you. Our International Business Management programme provides a practical and analytical understanding of business and management in the context of the global environment.

This programme aims to provide you with a broad-based understanding of businesses, their management and the environments in which they work while applying this to a global context.

The programme has a strong employability theme that is seen in the approach to delivery using live projects and consultancy.

You will gain extensive insight into the theoretical and practical application of management theories and frameworks. You will work with employers from a range of sectors and industries allowing you to develop their practical work experience. Differentiation from the Business Management and other programmes is reflected in the requirement that sectoral studies and/or independent projects are undertaken with an international focus.

You will have the opportunity to further enhance your knowledge and skills by undertaking professional qualifications.

PATHWAY OPTIONS

International Business Management (BA)

The BA International Business is aimed at domestic, UK, European and international students from a variety of academic and vocational backgrounds. It is available as a three-year full time programme or alternatively as a one-year ‘top-up’ course for students transferring from other programmes.

Final year International Direct Entry Mode

Students who choose this mode will study the International Business Communications module in block delivery format, at the beginning of their study time. They will benefit from personal counselling and support to establish a foundation for their continuing studies. They will study the remaining five modules (all at twenty credits, level six) and always benefit from full integration into the wider activities of the Faculty e.g. Enterprise and Industry Weeks, guest presentations, opportunities to enter industry/management competitions or develop business plans to start their own enterprises.
Students who wish to start the course in January rather than September should apply through the University. Applicants to the part-time course should also apply through the University.

Overview


This programme offers an academically challenging, vocational experience which incorporates innovative teaching and assessment methods. Students will be expected to be active in managing their learning experience, to be creative and to take initiatives to develop themselves. The opportunity to study business and management in action is a rewarding intellectual experience which also provides a well-grounded base for future career development.

The programme is designed with an emphasis on work-based learning in order to develop your employability skills in preparation for a career in international business. Innovative learning strategies will be vocationally based in order to develop distinctive locally and internationally focused students with the attributes employers require. The University’s international perspective and integration with employers and professional associations guarantee you highly relevant and current content. The wide range of extracurricular activities are both subject related and social experiences including a range of exciting field study trips which will further enhance your student experience.

The skills of managing ICT, communication to peers and external organisations, numeracy, problem solving, interacting in teams, ethical reasoning, critical appraisal, self-management and leadership have been particularly applauded.

Students’ progress through the programme ensures that they become increasingly self-confident and capable of managing their own learning.

Graduates will have developed self-confidence and the ability to work in diverse environments and communicate at a wide variety of levels. The involvement of employers, visiting speakers and other organisations in the delivery of the programme gives students opportunities to interact with external networks and see the relevance of their studies.

88 UCAS points.

The degree welcomes those who have studied other subject areas prior to entry as well as those applicants who have studied this subject in the past. Applicants with work experience, but few formal qualifications, may also join the programme following assessment of aptitude. In particular, the programme welcomes applicants who have A-level and Edexcel awards as well as a range of other certificates at this level from UK, EU and International bodies.

Other equivalent qualifications are accepted and the admissions panel will consider each application on an individual basis. Please note also that our offers are not based solely on your academic achievements; we take into account your full range of skills, experience and attainments when considering your application.

Grades are important; however, our offers are not solely based on academic results. We are interested in creative people that demonstrate a strong commitment to their chosen subject area and therefore we welcome applications from individuals from a wide range of backgrounds. To assess student suitability for their chosen course we normally arrange interviews for all applicants at which your skills, achievements and life experience will be considered as well as your qualifications.

Assessment

Assessment methods vary from module to module but you can expect a range of assessments including, coursework, practical work and exams. Assessments combine academic rigor with authentic “real-world” tasks that demonstrate a students ability to meaningfully apply their knowledge and skills.

The international job marketplace is increasingly competitive and our graduates exit with significant subject knowledge and relevant skills designed to meet the demands of employers. Possible careers are very diverse including entry (often with exemptions) to the management professions, management trainee programmes in financial institutions, services or manufacturing, management in public and third sector organisations, self-employment, teacher education or further study at master's or PhD levels.
