Introduction
Manufacturing has increased in complexity in recent years, with the increasing importance of new materials and processes, as well as the need to manage extended, integrated supply chains and networks on a global level. This course has been updated accordingly, in response to this complexity, to enable students to successfully enter this environment.
The Mechanical and Manufacturing Engineering programme provides a thorough grounding in Mechanical Engineering and application of this knowledge to manufacturing technology and materials. You will also study contemporary computer-aided design and manufacture as well as relevant numerical tools.
Through this course of study, you will learn about creating competitive advantage through manufacturing planning, strategy, quality, and control and develop the skills to design manufacturing processes that result in products that meet specific material and other requirements.
You will develop a systematic approach to projects, taking the logical and practical steps necessary to make often complex concepts become reality. You will also learn to be risk, cost and value-conscious, and aware of your ethical, social, cultural, environmental, health and safety, and wider professional responsibilities of the mechanical and manufacturing industry.
Modern Manufacturing Engineering takes place in a highly competitive, rapidly changing marketplace and is very different from the traditional impressions of this sector.
This course is available to study on a part-time basis.
The following Bachelor’s degrees have been accredited as meeting the academic requirement, in part, for Chartered Engineer (CEng in Part) registration for the cohort intakes from 2015 up to, and including, 2023:
• BEng(Hons) Mechanical and Manufacturing Engineering (Full-Time 3 Years; Part-Time 6 Years; EngC ref 15962)
• BEng(Hons) Mechanical and Manufacturing Engineering with a year in industry (Full-Time 4 Years; EngC ref 15963).

Overview
The Mechanical and Manufacturing Engineering programmes are intended to provide students with a thorough grounding in mechanical, electrical and electronic engineering.
In addition, students will develop knowledge in a suitable range of manufacturing processes and materials. The programmes will also consider environmental aspects of design and technology and will enable students to gain a range of skills, relevant to a broad range of employment opportunities.
A thorough understanding of automation, robotics, digital simulation and manufacturing concepts are also important if engineers are going to be able to deploy these advanced technologies to their full potential. These topics are covered in our programme.
The university has a long and established record of developing graduates with expertise in mechanical and manufacturing disciplines.
Working closely with a number of local, national and international companies, this programme has been designed to develop graduates that are well equipped to join a global community of Mechanical and Manufacturing engineers.
Our BEng(Hons) Mechanical and Manufacturing Engineering (Full-Time 3 Years; Part-Time 6 Years; EngC ref 15962) and BEng (Hons) Mechanical and Manufacturing Engineering with a year in industry (Full-Time 4 Years; EngC ref 15963) are accredited as meeting the academic requirement, in part, for Chartered Engineer (CEng in Part) registration by the Institution of Mechanical Engineers under licence from the UK regulator, the Engineering Council. Accreditation is a mark of assurance that the degree meets the standards set by the Engineering Council in the UK Standard for Professional Engineering Competence (UK-SPEC).
An accredited degree will provide you with some or all of the underpinning knowledge, understanding and skills for eventual registration as an Incorporated (IEng) or Chartered Engineer (CEng). Some employers recruit preferentially from accredited degrees, and an accredited degree is likely to be recognised by other countries that are signatories to international accords.
