Introduction
Our Sports Management programmes focus on the recent developments in the world of local, regional, and international sport. Over the past decade we have seen significant changes in the sector, including the wealth of the Premier League, the rise of the IPL (Indian Premier League) and increases in infrastructure developments from stadia to health clubs.
The Sports Management programmes provide you with a range of skills — coaching, instructing, mentoring, management and more — to help you pursue a wide range of careers.
The programmes require you to become an independent learner with the maturity to collect information, analyse content to understand the current environment and identify key recommendations for various stakeholders. These are fundamental characteristics for employment in the sector and are developed over the course of your studies, where a lecturerguided approach is implemented at Level 4 and a student-centred learning and teaching approach is adopted in later years.
Graduates of this programme have become involved in a plethora of regional and national sports organisations.
Why choose this course?
1. This course will attract individuals who wish to work within the sports management field from a global perspective. Students will gain an understanding of global influences in sport which would also include cultural and language challenges for elite sports players and global organizations.
2. The decision to hold the FIFA World Cup in two emerging sports markets (Russia in 2018 and Qatar in 2022) demonstrates the global growth and reach of sport. Add to this the enormous cost ($51b) of hosting the recent Winter Olympics (Sochi, 2014) and the commercialisation of Rio as a destination for global sport with the Football World Cup (2014) and the Summer Olympic Games (2016).
3. An International Industrial Placement will also allow students to experience the benefits of working overseas or for a global organisation in the sports and entertainment industry. Previous placement students have had the opportunity to experience work-based learning in Europe, North America and many opportunities in the United Kingdom with professional sports teams and international sports providers.
4. There are a plethora of opportunities that exist within this growing market as a direct result of building new facility infrastructure that includes many new stadiums and public, private and not for profit sporting facilities across the UK and beyond. Much of which is a direct result of global sporting competitions that include World Cups, National Championships, Commonwealth and Olympic Games. This is also mirrored within industry with an expansion in private health clubs and the low-cost gym sector.
